What is Whiplash?
Whiplash occurs when the head is wrenched quickly in one direction for example during a road traffic incident (RTI). This leads to a very painful spasm of muscles in order to protect the delicate structures in your neck. The range of motion in the neck will be significantly reduced, and if left untreated whiplash can lead to permanent joint and muscular dysfunction. Despite the effectiveness of chiropractic, patients are often left at the side of the road after such an incident with the paramedics saying that there is nothing to be done about it.
Causes of Whiplash
Although RTI’s are the best known cause of whiplash, any fast movement of the head and neck can cause the condition, for example:
- Bungee Jumping
- Martial Arts and Boxing
- and so on…..
Usually, a patient is aware of the cause of the whiplash. Your chiropractor will want to know exactly how the whiplash occurred in order to work out which muscles and joints in your neck are the most affected. This will allow the treatment to be more specific to your injury.
Chiropractic is effective in treating acute whiplash-associated disorders (for more, see this report). It is very important with whiplash to see a chiropractor or other therapist as soon as possible after the incident. You may not be treated straight away if your neck is inflamed in order to let it settle down, but the longer a whiplash injury is left, the harder it is to see the positive results of treatment. You will not be given exercises or stretches to begin with because they are likely to exacerbate the injury. However, as things improve you will be given some of these exercises to return normal range of motion and function in the neck.
What’s the Bottom Line?
Whiplash can be very effectively managed with chiropractic treatment, especially if it is caught in the early stages! Do not delay in booking a treatment if you suspect you may have a whiplash-associated disorder.
