Chiropractic is generally considered a very safe and effective form of conservative care.  So much so that there are no contraindications to chiropractic in pregnancy.  Mild symptoms following an adjustment are common and will be discussed with your practitioner.  More severe incidents are far less common and have been shown to be lower in the general population than those in chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care can absolutely help with sciatica.  We know this from many studies showing a benefit of chiropractic care with patients who suffer from sciatica, but also from helping thousands of patients with sciatica in the nearby area.  Sciatica is a symptoms of nerve based leg pain which often arises from the spine.  The most important thing is working out the cause of your sciatica, which we would work out through thorough orthopedic and neurological testing, palpation and X-ray as appropriate.

Chiropractic can definitely help with headaches, although it depends on their cause.  Many studies show that chiropractic care can help with the management of migraine headaches and in practice our third most common for seeking our chiropractic care is headache.  Often the symptoms will arise from issues in the neck, leading to a combination of neck and headache pain.  This can be accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness, eye pain and nausea.  If you’re unsure whether your headaches are partly from issues in your neck then consider booking a phone call, spine check or consultation and exam.

This will entirely depend on whether you want to be purely pain based, or to fully rehabilitate the joints and tissues of the spine.  As the saying goes ‘you get out what you put in’ and your health is no different.  Some patients choose to have 2-8 visits, opting to reduce symptoms for as little money and time as possible.  Others choose to undergo more of a care plan which may range from 12-32 visits.  On your second visit, your chiropractor will go through an optimum care plan which is tailored to you.  However, this will completely depend on your presentation and your choices will always be honored.  We work for you.

At a first visit, you will be asked to fill in a consultation intake form which your chiropractor will ask about at the start of your consultation.  Then, your chiropractor will do a physical exam, often including joint, muscle and nerve tests.  This is largely comfortable and conducted clothed.  If appropriate, you may have X-ray examination in this visit and you may also receive a ‘test adjustment’.  This is to test the joints of the spine and get the ball rolling with your future care with us. If you have any questions, please just ask.

No, you do not need a referral from your GP or any other practitioner before going to see a chiropractor.  Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners and therefore can diagnose issues themselves within their remit.  If we think you would be better off seeing your GP as well, or for a secondary issue that doesn’t relate to chiropractic care then we would let you know, and we can always write a letter for GP’s or specialists as appropriate.

This is completely up to you.  Physiotherapists are regulated by a governing body just like chiropractors, but the two disciplines have very different approaches and goals.  Chiropractors are primarily focused on the health on the spine – its joints, muscles and nerves.  Generally we are there to help improve the movement of joints, the function of the spine and the nerve flow from the spine to the rest of the body.  This is a process of rehabilitation, with a focus on the adjustment to specifically work on those tissues so that they can work better.

Physiotherapists are more concerned with the function of muscle and joints, but with less of an emphasis on the nerves of the spine.  Physios do not adjust the spine, preferring to mobilise and massage soft tissues.  A lot of physios have more emphasis on exercises as their primary medium of intervention.

It will depend on your personal issues, your type of injury or goals and your response to other treatments as to who you wanted to see.  We have plenty of patients who see a physio at the same time, after all we are all trying to get you better, just using different methods.

Conditions We Commonly Help

Lower back pain is probably the most common ailment that people see us with.  Our chiropractors prioritise working out the causes of your back pain, before offering you options for your care, whether it’s chiropractic, sports massage therapy or other referral for other treatment options. Chiropractic can be very effective in cases of simple lower back pain and our X-ray facilities are often very helpful in working out a specific plan of care tailored to your needs.  Chiropractic adjustments help by rehabilitating motion in the spine, reducing nerve stress and allowing muscles and soft tissues to reset and heal.  Once you are on the road to recovery, our chiropractors will be able to reassess your progress and make sure that you stabilise as quickly as possible.

Neck pain can be just as debilitating and frustrating as lower or middle back pain.  There are many causes of neck pain, however our chiropractors will focus on working out exactly the cause of your issues before they give you a plan of care.  Many patients struggle with movement in the neck, as our modern lifestyles make the middle of the neck stiffen and straighten making turning and extension very difficult and painful.  Often, X-rays can be indicated and allow us to have a much clearer picture of your specific issues, but this will be dependant on many factors around your neck health and mobility.  There may also be a muscular component from chronic stress which may need to be addressed during the healing process.

Headaches are often greatly improved with chiropractic care and massage therapy.  We would never claim to ‘cure’ a headache, because there are many different types of headaches and some of them are driven by other factors such as water intake, medication and mental stress.  Instead, we focus on any dysfunction or stress on the spine and neck tissues, which have a huge impact on headaches through nerve and blood flow.  Much like neck pain, an X-ray can be very useful in working out the specific cause of continuing headaches.  Evidence also shows that chiropractic is effective in managing migraines.

Sciatica is a form of debilitating leg pain, usually characterised by pain shooting down the back of the leg on one side.  This can be accompanied by numbness, pins and needles, loss of strength or burning, as well as lower back pain.  Other forms of leg pain to the buttocks, knee or front of the leg are also common (although not technically sciatica).  As always, the goal is working out why the sciatic nerve is irritated or trapped and working on a plan to rehabilitate the spine and pelvis so that the cause of the leg pain is alleviated.  We always aim to do this through conservative care with chiropractic and message therapy where possible, rather than resorting to drugs or surgery.

Shoulder pain is incredibly common, and the most common form of shoulder pain is ‘impingement’ on the top and front of the shoulder joint.  This will often result in reduced movement, especially in overhead tasks and behind the back.  Our chiropractors and sports massage therapists will perform a range of tests to narrow down the affected tissues in the shoulder.  Most shoulder injuries will require some muscle work and exercises simply because they are very ‘muscular’ joints.  However, cases of frozen shoulder and impingement will often have a spinal and collar bone component.  Whatever the cause of your shoulder pain, our practitioners will assess you thoroughly before offering a bespoke plan for your care.

We see a lot of sports injuries in clinic, ranging from sprained ankles to bad falls and subluxated ribs.  If you are unsure of how to proceed, we would recommend seeing one of our chiropractors for a consultation and examination where we can work out what sort of injury you have gone through.  Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners (like GPs) and so we can diagnose sports injuries and refer as appropriate.  Often, our sports massage therapists are an invaluable adjunct to care, and are able to massage the soft tissues, allowing your body to recover and heal.

We are fortunate to see lots of pregnant women at Relief, and we are happy to see them throughout pregnancy from 1-9 months.  There is no contraindication to chiropractic in pregnancy, and we are confident in supporting mothers during what should be a wonderful and special time.  In the early stages, mothers sometimes experience back pain, as well as throughout the process of growth and change.  Women’s bodies change significantly during this time, and we are very keen on our pregnant ladies feeling confident in their birth plan.  Stress on the pelvis and surrounding structures has a big effect on birth and we would love our patients to have the best experience.

At Relief Chiropractic Health Clinic, we see a lot of families once people realise the benefits of care for themselves.  We are very grateful to see lots of babies and children, for a range of reasons from colic, crying, indigestion, difficulty feeding and general failure to thrive.  Of course, there can be many reasons for all of these ailments, and only some of them will be because of stress on the spine.  However, we have seen wonderful changes to mood, sleep and function in practice, and we can quickly work out if chiropractic might be able to help.

With our modern lifestyles, postural problems are becoming more common.  Forward head posture for example (or ‘text neck’) puts pressure on the middle and upper neck, often leading to some of the headaches and neck pain we see in practice.  As well as chiropractic adjustments to relieve stress and improve motion, people often need advice on work and home postures so that they can reinforce good habits.  This allows them to stabilise the issue and avoid things slipping back.  Our patients also often notice that whilst they are getting treatment, their posture dramatically improves.
