Elderly Patients

As we age, there are a lot of considerations when it comes to your spinal health. It is fair to say that an older spine will have been put through more stress and traumas than a younger spine. At Relief, we pride ourselves on treating appropriate to the individual. We also offer X-ray imaging when appropriate, so that we can be certain of exactly what we are dealing with.

We don’t want to ‘guess’ what’s going on with your spinal health.  That’s why X-ray is often appropriate in older patients

It’s not ‘just old age’

Sometimes, patients fall into the trap of thinking that arthritis, aches and pains are ‘normal’ or ‘just old age’. Nothing could be further from the truth! Just because a problem is common, this doesn’t make it normal. Often, our older patients notice life altering changes to their quality of life once they start treatment.

It’s true that there are some conditions which can’t be ‘fixed’. However, managing them properly is an excellent goal and can keep patients doing the things they love to do, as well as feeling better in themselves.

Just like golf – at the very least you don’t want your game to get worse!

Chiropractic in Older Patients

Just like with younger adults, the key goal with chiropractic in the elderly is to find the areas of the spine with the greatest stress and to restore motion in those areas. Your chiropractor will suggest a treatment plan based on your individual case. There are studies showing that elderly patients who receive chiropractic care reported better overall health, fewer chronic conditions, less days in hospitals and nursing homes, greater mobility, improvement in balance and quality of life than non-chiropractic elderly patients(1),(2). This is aside from the usual conditions that we treat, such as back pain, neck pain and migraine headaches.

Massage Therapy in Older Patients

Your massage therapist will tailor your massage to your individual case. Sometimes, when a patient is older, there will naturally be less tissue to work with. Your therapist will sometimes spend slightly less time massaging in these cases, so as not to overwhelm your body. Remember, you don’t have to do sports to have a sports massage, it’s all about using techniques and approaches to solve specific problems that you have. None of our massages have an ‘age limit’ and sometimes a Relaxation massage or Reflexology appointment can be just what you need to de-stress.
