Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic Care

We understand that sometimes our patients want to know a little bit more information about chiropractic before booking an appointment. Our chiropractors have tried to answer the most commonly asked questions, however if you can not find the answer here please do not hesitate to contact us.

For more information on our other services see our Acupuncture FAQ and Massage Therapy FAQ as well.

No. Although classically recognised as being particularly effective for low back pain, neck pain and migraine headaches, chiropractic is also helpful with a whole host of other conditions. As specialists in spinal and joint movement, we at Relief Chiropractic treat the patient’s spine; not the symptom.

If your problem is to do with your nerves, muscles or joints, chiropractic is likely to help.  Some problems however, will not respond to treatment and should be addressed by another healthcare specialist.  This may be a massage therapist, GP or rheumatologist.  Either way, we recommend coming in to Relief Chiropractic for a thorough assessment so that we can point you in the right direction.

Meet the team for more details. You can request whomever you feel comfortable with.  We usually suggest staying with the same chiropractor for at least 6 visits initially so that you can have continuity of care.

Generally, no. However, when someone is in acute pain any movement of the area will be a little tender.  Much like exercise, there is often some soreness after adjustment, due to the changes taking place through the joint.

Through experience we have found that getting on and off the bench or in and out of the car are usually the most painful parts of the process in acute cases, because we are able to tailor our approach to being more gentle.

Initial consultations are generally approximately 30 minutes in order to complete a full neurological and orthopaedic screening and find out what’s causing any problems you might have. We ask that you fill in a medical history form before arrival.

For adjustment visits, we usually suggest allowing for about 10-15 minutes. Adjustments don’t take a long time as an intervention, but everyone is different.  The main thing is that we take as long as is needed and we never rush.

Please let us know 24 hours before the appointment that you are unavailable if you can. Your visit is reserved for you, so it helps for us to know in advance so that another person can be helped.

For all visits, you should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing in order to move about the bench and have your body assessed (jogging bottoms and a T-shirt for example).  It’s rare that clothing gets in the way of an adjustment.  If you are wearing difficult clothing for the visit, we can provide other clothing.

You can always have a chaperone such as a family member or close friend. We also have staff on hand who can be present in a visit. Remember, for the adjustment visits themselves you will be completely clothed and your chiropractor will take their time to make you feel comfortable.

This is best answered in your first visit with your chiropractor as it depends on the person and on the problem. A time frame of 6-12 weeks for the initial healing process is a good guideline, but the number of visits will vary from person to person. Also, although symptoms are important, we at Relief focus on spinal function and health; rather than being ‘painkillers’.

We pride ourselves on offering really great value for money and really honest prices. Our our payment plans allow adjustment visits to cost as little as £32 per visit, allowing you to make some great savings. For more details see our fees page.

Yes.  We accept all types of payment including cash and card payments with the exception of American Express.

Some insurance providers are happy to cover complementary therapies, but you will have to check with your individual provider to see if they cover this and if they accept our clinic.

Our policy regarding insurance companies is that we ask the individual to pay for visits themselves and then claim back from their insurance provider. We understand that not all providers allow this option, however, due to various issues with invoicing, we have found that it is not worth registering our practice with insurance providers.

At present, our success rate is normally about 90-95% when patients follow through with their care plan. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees of results. Sometimes we have to change our expectations depending on the case, but it’s safe to say that we will be very likely to help as long as your condition is appropriate for chiropractic care.

Generally the difference is that historically chiropractors were more concerned with improving nerve function where osteopaths were concerned with improving blood flow.  Nowadays, there are more similarities than differences between the professions.  Find a professional who suits you and you will not go far wrong.

Our approach at Relief is to be very specific with our findings and our adjustment, and to follow through with a care plan that’s appropriate to the condition.  We tend to have slightly longer relationships with our patients because we want to improve their spinal health; not just their pain.

If you still have questions we can probably answer them in person, why not contact us?  Failing that, the GCC has some very informative FAQ sections.

Frequently Asked Questions about Massage Care

We understand that sometimes our patients want to know a little bit more information about massage therapy before booking an appointment. Our massage therapists have tried to answer the most commonly asked questions in this massage therapy FAQ, however if you can not find the answer here please do not hesitate to contact us.

If you have muscle stiffness, pain or would like to release stress and tension, massage is a very safe and effective solution. Some problems however, will not respond to treatment and should be addressed by another healthcare specialist. This may be a massage therapist, GP or rheumatologist.  Either way, we recommend coming in to Relief Chiropractic for a thorough assessment so that we can point you in the right direction.

Our reception staff will help you to book the appointment that best suits your individual needs. However as a general rule of thumb; if you have a painful problem an initial massage appointment is the place to start.  If you are simply looking for a traditional relaxation massage to help you unwind, Swedish or head, neck and shoulder massage are recommended. We also offer reflexology for general health and wellbeing.

We have a team of massage therapists, who offer a number of different types of massage. We will make sure you see the massage therapist who is most appropriate for your diary.

Sports massage therapy shouldn’t be painful.  However, it’s really important that patients give their massage therapist feedback if they feel any tenderness or pain.  At Relief, our massage therapists are very used to working well with your comfort levels.  Like exercise, a certain level of soreness is expected after the visit, as your tissues respond.

Cost will vary depending on each persons treatment plan. Our full price list is here on our website and we also offer payment plans to help make things as affordable as possible.

Some insurance providers are happy to cover complementary therapies, but you will have to check with your individual provider to see if they cover this and if they accept our clinic.

No.  You can book an appointment with a Massage Therapist without seeing a Chiropractor. The more complicated the problem, the more appropriate it may be to see a Chiropractor first. Our Massage Therapists will discuss future care options with you in your appointment, and they may advise continued massage therapy and or seeing a Chiropractor, however you should not feel any obligation to make an appointment with a Chiropractor at any stage.

Any other questions might be best answered either by reception, or by the massage therapist themselves.  Please contact us and we will be happy to explain more.
