About Laser Therapy

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy employs low power or ‘soft’ laser light to aid the natural healing process of the body safely and effectively. It has been used for over 30 years and is widely available in the medical field for treatment of pain, wound healing and musculoskeletal conditions. Low level laser therapy cannot burn or harm the skin (unlike a surgical laser). Its effects are photo-biochemical, not thermal and can even be used as a needle free alternative to acupuncture.

What’s Laser Therapy Used For?

Laser therapy allows rapid healing in the treatment of:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Acute and chronic back pain
  • Epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Sports injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Fracture healing
  • Chronic oedema (swelling)
  • Osteo-arthritis
  • Rheumatoid
  • Adhesions

How does Laser Therapy work?

The effects of laser therapy have been extensively researched and are becoming more understood. Particular wavelengths of light stimulate the body’s healing cells: initial absorption by the mitochondria leads to increased fibroblast cell proliferation and migration, with modulation of the cytokine levels, growth factors, inflammatory mediators and increased tissue oxygenation – all part of the natural healing process.

By directly targeting a dysfunctional or unhealthy tissue, laser therapy helps the body to heal itself in a specific area. Areas which have had this for a longer time (chronic conditions) often need to have the healing process restarted. Think of it like a ‘reset button’ for soft tissues that are struggling.

The Advantages of Laser Therapy

  • Kickstarts old issues into healing again
  • Virtually painless application
  • Very safe and utilised in many different medical practices
  • Combines excellently with chiropractic and massage therapy
  • Good body of evidence based care
  • Often patients notice some changes within 2-3 visits
  • Short treatment times
  • Reduces inflammation and pain without drugs or surgery

What to Expect

Depending on the condition to be treated, laser therapy is offered on a twice or once weekly basis with progressively less frequent treatments until the condition has been resolved. It may be appropriate for the patient to be co-managed with massage or chiropractic care during this process.

You will feel nothing at the point of application, but many people report a wonderful relaxed feeling, probably due to the laser’s effect on endorphin release as demonstrated in research. The low intensity laser beam does not cut or burn and has no side effects. Laser goggles are worn as precautionary eye protection.

Most people are suitable for the therapy although there are certain cautions and contraindications as with any form of electrotherapy equipment – your laser therapist will advise.
