Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower back pain treatment using chiropractic care can be very beneficial.

But What is Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is very common among those that see a chiropractor, and manifests as pain and/or stiffness. This often includes the lumbar region and also the back of the pelvis.  Low back pain is said to affect roughly 80% of people at some point in their lives.  Because the nerves which exit the spine here are responsible for the legs, people often get buttock and leg pain, numbness or tingling.  Another associated complaint is sciatica (pain shooting down the back of the leg to the foot).  These nerves also supply the whole of the pelvis area, the hips and the lower internal organs, meaning that referred pain and dysfunction can be felt in these areas at times.

Causes of Low Back Pain

There are many causes of low back pain, and not all of these are treatable by a chiropractor.  Chiropractors treat mechanical causes of back pain, and will refer you for lower back pain treatment elsewhere for non-mechanical causes.  A chiropractor’s job is to find the areas of greatest stress and to rehabilitate movement through the lower back using specific adjustments of the spine. Old injuries, our jobs, the way we sit, stand, lift, drive or sleep can create stress on the muscles and joints of the low back.

Some of the mechanical causes of low back pain include:

  • Poor posture.
  • Pelvic misalignment.
  • Lack of muscle use
  • Asymmetry of muscle
  • Muscle spasm
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative disks
  • Spinal disk herniation (‘slipped disk’)
  • Sacroilliac joint dysfunction
  • Trauma and accidents

Before your visit, you are quite likely to be unaware of the cause of your pain.  That’s fine! your chiropractor will be very happy to help you work out what sort of low back pain you have and point you in the right direction for lower back pain treatment.  Your Chiropractor will conduct an exam and possibly an X-ray to work out the underlying cause of your low back pain.  Only then can an appropriate treatment plan be discussed.

Chiropractic Treatments

Chiropractic is a proven effective treatment for both acute and chronic (short and long term) low back pain and there are numerous studies showing this.  Some of these studies have also focussed on cost-effectiveness, showing chiropractic care as being more cost effective than other approaches to lower back pain.

Lower Back Exercises

As mentioned above, movement is the most important function of your back. Some simple low back exercises can be a valuable part of your recovery.  However, exercises alone are often not enough, as the joints need rehabilitation in proper movement through chiropractic adjustment.  Once things are moving better, exercises can work wonders in improving range of motion and general spinal alignment.  Your chiropractor will almost always give you some of these exercises to maintain movement and later, to strengthen your lower back.  Please do not undergo any exercise regime without first consulting a primary healthcare professional like a chiropractor, particularly if you have an undiagnosed problem.

What’s The Bottom Line?

There are many approaches to low back pain despite how painful, debilitating and even depressing it can be.  Chiropractic is one of the most effective solutions and has even been found to be the most cost effective compared with medical care.  Your outcome is likely to be better if you get started on the healing process sooner.  So book a consultation and examination as soon as possible.  Chiropractic, and other manual therapies are suggested in the NICE guidelines as well.
