Chiropractor for Pregnancy

At Relief, we are well versed in treating pregnant patients. It’s a time where you need to feel comfortable that healthcare decisions are in your (and your baby’s) best interests. We are honoured when we are able to look after the whole family.

Pregnancy is a unique time of a woman’s life, where huge changes are happening throughout the body. The distribution of weight completely changes how stress goes through the pelvis, the abdominal muscles weaken, and hormones loosen the ligaments throughout the spine. This sometimes causes it to become unstable, creating joint protection, lack of proper movement and pain.

Chiropractic in Pregnancy

Chiropractic care helps keep the stress off joints that have chosen to ‘splint’ and stiffen due to the changes above. This allows the pelvis to sit evenly, often making it much more comfortable and functional during pregnancy. We have treated many patients with upper back pain, pelvic girdle pain, uncomfortable lower back pain and ‘nervy’ pains through the hip, groin and legs. Aside from these sorts of conditions, many patients notice that they are walking better, moving better and feel ‘straighter’, which we feel can only be a good thing for general fitness and the delivery of your baby(1).

Safety of Chiropractic in Pregnancy

Chiropractic is safe and effective during pregnancy(2), even in the first trimester where some treatments such as massage therapy are contraindicated. As you might imagine, X-rays during pregnancy are inappropriate due to the potential damage to the foetus. However, a detailed physical examination can reveal areas of greatest stress and allow the pregnancy chiropractor to adjust the joints comfortably. In earlier stages, patients are often able to lie on their front, however later on many techniques can be used face up, sitting or in side-lying postures for the patient’s comfort.

Massage Therapy During Pregnancy

Massage therapy is safe to utilise during the second two trimesters of pregnancy. In the first trimester, such treatments are better avoided due to the (very small) risk of miscarriage.

Massage therapy might be used to aid relaxation and sleep, as well as reduce stress during what can be a difficult time. Many patients choose to have some massage therapy in the last months of pregnancy, when lower stress levels are desired for a calm and natural birth. Click here to learn more about massage therapy.

Massage and Chiropractor in Pregnancy FAQ

What are the benefits of seeing a pregnancy chiropractor?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy offers several potential benefits, including relief from back pain, sciatic nerve pain, pelvic pain, and other musculoskeletal discomforts commonly experienced during pregnancy. It may also help improve pelvic alignment, enhance overall comfort, and prepare the body for labour and delivery.

What techniques do pregnancy chiropractors use?

Pregnancy chiropractors use a variety of gentle and specialised techniques tailored to the unique needs of pregnant women. These may include adjustments in a side lying position, or on the back, rather than face down. The adjustments used during pregnancy are often more gentle, with specific focus on the pelvis, upper back and neck regions.

How often should I see a pregnancy chiropractor?

The frequency of how often you see a chiropractor when pregnant depends on your individual needs, preferences, and the recommendations of your chiropractor. Some pregnant women benefit from regular visits for a time, several times a week, while others may have maintenance visits every two weeks leading up to the estimated due date.

Can a pregnancy chiropractor help with postpartum recovery?

Chiropractic care may be beneficial for postpartum recovery, helping to address musculoskeletal imbalances, promote healing, and support the body as it transitions back to its pre-pregnancy state. Pregnancy chiropractors may offer gentle adjustments to allow the body to heal naturally from the stresses of childbirth and pregnancy, as well as the extra problems from having a newborn infant to take care of.

How is pregnancy massage in Cambridge different from other massage techniques?

Pregnancy massage involves modifications to accommodate the changing needs and physical limitations of pregnant women. Special positioning, such as side-lying or semi-reclined positions, is used to ensure the safety and comfort of the mother and the baby. Additionally, certain massage techniques may be avoided or modified, particularly deep tissue or pressure on specific acupressure points that could potentially trigger contractions.

Can a pregnancy massage in Cambridge help with labour preparation?

Some studies suggest that regular prenatal massage during pregnancy, especially in the last months, can help prepare the body for labour by reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and improving overall muscle tone and flexibility. Additionally, certain massage techniques, such as acupressure on specific points, may help stimulate uterine contractions. However, it’s essential to discuss any labour preparation techniques with your healthcare provider before trying them.

Can I receive a pregnancy massage in Cambridge if I am high-risk?

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or pregnancy complications, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before scheduling a pregnancy massage. Depending on your specific condition, your healthcare provider may recommend modifications or precautions, or they may advise against massage therapy altogether.
