Deep Tissue Massage Cambridge

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage techniques work deeper with firmer pressure into the muscle tissue to help ease aches and pains. It is often used for tight muscles to release tension and remove adhesions (knots). Our sports massage therapists use deep tissue massage to help with a specific problem, where our relaxation massage therapists use it to help with stress relief. Here’s a few benefits of a deep tissue massage:

  • Helps ease muscle tension
  • Offers stress relief
  • Helps to improve circulation therefore promoting healing in the areas treated
  • Helps to ease general aches and pains

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Pain relief: By targeting deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue, deep tissue massage can alleviate chronic pain, muscle tension, and soreness.

Improved mobility: Deep tissue massage helps release restrictions in muscles and joints, promoting a better range of motion and flexibility.

Stress reduction: The firm pressure and slow strokes used in deep tissue massage can induce relaxation, reduce stress hormones, and promote overall relaxation.

Injury recovery: Deep tissue massage can aid in the rehabilitation of injuries by promoting circulation, reducing scar tissue, and speeding up the healing process.

Better posture: By releasing tight muscles and improving flexibility, deep tissue massage can help correct postural imbalances and promote proper alignment.

Enhanced athletic performance: Deep tissue massage can improve blood flow to muscles, reduce muscle tension, and enhance recovery, leading to improved athletic performance and reduced risk of injury.

Relief from chronic conditions: Deep tissue massage benefits also include relief from chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and chronic headaches by reducing pain and promoting relaxation.

Deep tissue massage techniques involve the use of oils on the skin with various massage strokes which relieve tension and warm up muscle tissue. The pressure is firm and the massage is deep in order to remove adhesions in the muscle and to help promote healthy tissue. If you are looking for a deep tissue massage, we recommend different massages depending on your individual wants and needs.

To focus on working deeply into a problem area, we recommend booking a deep tissue massage consultation with a sports massage therapist.

If you are looking for a general whole body treatment, a stress relief massage uses deep tissue massage techniques to help release muscle tension.

Deep Tissue Massage FAQ

What to do after a deep tissue massage

If an area seems to be throbbing or achy use icing for 20 minutes to reduce inflammation.  Heat can also be useful to improve blood flow and further reduce tension.

Are deep tissue massages painful?

Deep tissue massages can sometimes cause discomfort, but they shouldn’t be excessively painful. The pressure applied during a deep tissue massage may feel intense, especially in areas of tension or muscle knots. However, it’s important to communicate with your massage therapist about your comfort level. They can adjust the pressure to ensure it is effective yet tolerable for you. While you may experience some soreness afterwards, it should subside within a day or two.

Can I get a deep-tissue massage while pregnant?

Yes, you can typically receive a deep tissue massage while pregnant, but it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider first, especially if you have any high-risk factors or complications during pregnancy.  Some practitioners will not be as comfortable massaging in the first trimester of pregnancy, simply because it is a time of increased general risk.  However, our massage therapists can modify the treatment to ensure the safety and comfort of both you and your baby. Prenatal deep tissue massage can help alleviate pregnancy-related discomfort, but it’s crucial to communicate any concerns or preferences with your massage therapist during the session.

Does deep tissue massage release toxins?

While some proponents of deep tissue massage believe that it can release toxins from the muscles, there isn’t strong scientific evidence to support this claim. The concept of “toxin release” from massage is controversial and not well-understood in the scientific community.

However, deep tissue massage can promote relaxation, increase blood circulation, and reduce muscle tension, which may help improve overall well-being. Any temporary discomfort experienced during or after a massage is more likely due to the manipulation of muscles rather than the release of toxins. As always, it’s essential to stay hydrated after a massage to help flush out metabolic waste products from the body.

Is deep tissue massage good for arthritis?

Yes, deep tissue massage can be beneficial for arthritis. While it may not directly treat the underlying causes of arthritis, such as joint inflammation or cartilage damage, it can help alleviate symptoms associated with the condition.

Deep tissue massage can help reduce muscle tension, stiffness, and pain in the affected areas, improving mobility and function. Additionally, massage therapy can promote relaxation, increase blood circulation, and stimulate the release of endorphins, which can help reduce pain perception and improve overall well-being for individuals with arthritis.
