Muscle Energy Techniques in Cambridge (MET’s)

Muscle energy techniques, or MET’s, are a type of manual therapy used by our sports massage therapists. It involves active use of the injured muscle by the individual, and a precise counterforce which is applied by the therapist to increase the range of motion.

This technique doesn’t require a specific booking as your therapist will assess whether it’s needed during your sports massage. Our therapists may also use other massage techniques to further treat the surrounding soft tissues if necessary.

What is Muscle Energy Technique??

Muscle energy technique is a type of manual therapy where the injured muscle is moved in a specific direction and motion by the patient, whilst the therapist applies a precise counterforce. The muscle is engaged by this active and direct treatment, allowing it to move beyond its restrictive barrier. The main use of MET’s is to improve the range of motion in a joint where it has been lost.

Muscle Energy Technique benefits

There are numerous benefits of muscle energy technique, the main being relaxation of the injured muscle, which helps to bring it back to a healthy state. Other benefits include:

  • Increased range of motion
  • Improved function of muscles
  • Pain relief

What to expect with Muscle Energy Technique

If patient participation is as precise as possible, you can ensure you’ll get the best outcome out of muscle energy technique. Your therapist will ask you to actively move your arms, legs or body into position and your therapist will place a force against you, which you’ll be asked to resist for 5-10 seconds. This is usually repeated, encouraging further movement and range of motion each time. It’s important to listen and follow the exact instructions given by your therapist as it will allow you to enjoy the full benefits of this technique.
