Sports Massage Techniques: Kinesiology Tape Technique in Cambridge
Kinesiology Tape Technique
There are many techniques our sports massage therapists use and the kinesiology tape technique is one of them. This technique involves the use of stretchy adhesive tape which is applied to the skin on a muscle or around a joint.
The kinesiology tape technique doesn’t require a specific booking as your therapist will assess whether it’s needed during your massage. It’s also worth noting, not all conditions or injuries will require taping. If this technique is something you’re interested in, book a telephone call with your therapist to discuss in more detail.
What is the kinesiology tape technique?
Kinesiology taping is a technique used to aid in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as back, shoulder and knee pain. It involves using a stretchy adhesive tape which is applied on to the muscle or around a joint.
Your sports massage therapist might suggest undergoing kinesiology taping for many reasons including supporting a weak joint, to help with continued healing of an injured area or to even create better body awareness.
If your chiropractor suspects that you have an underlying health problem or it was because of trauma you may be referred to your GP or a specialist to rule out other causes of your back pain. This obviously depends on the nature of the injury and your presentation.
Kinesiology Taping Benefits
There are many kinesiology taping benefits including:
- Rehabilitation of injuries
- Support for weak joints or muscles
- Retrains muscles to move or function in a healthier way
- Improves circulation
- Protects against injury during an event
Kinesiology taping benefits don’t just end after you’ve been into our clinic as the tape is left on the affected area(s) so you’ll be experiencing the effects long after your appointment. It is worth noting that kinesiology taping benefits can vary due to a number of factors; such as the specific needs of the individual, the frequency and duration of care and the underlying cause of the issue.
What to expect with the Kinesiology Tape Technique
Once the area being treated has been identified, the specialist tape is cut to size, stretched out and applied directly to the skin. This may be around a joint or onto a muscle. The tape is left on for a few days until it loses its tension or falls off on its own. It may be necessary and beneficial for the tape to be applied several times over a certain length of time to see the best results.
Although kinesiology taping is safe for most people, some individuals may not qualify to have the technique performed. For example, if you have an open wound, deep vein thrombosis or diabetes, this technique will not be a suitable option. That’s why we offer a consultation where you’ll be fully assessed for suitability.
Still unsure if Kinesiology Taping is right for you?
As the kinesiology taping technique doesn’t require a specific booking, we strongly recommend you speak with a sports massage therapist if this is something you particularly want, so you can check if this technique is right for you. You can book a consultation or request a free phone call to get some guidance on your next steps.
